At a recent
meeting, the United Way of Howard County campaign leadership and Board of
Directors set the 2009 community campaign goal at $1.5 million.
The United Way
campaign leadership hopes achieve the goal under the leadership of campaign
chair Laura Sheets, Duke Energy and vice-chair Rex Gingerich, McGonigal/Button
Chrysler Dodge.
"The greatest
strength of our community is its character,” Sheets said. “We have always been
a generous community that cares about taking care of one another regardless of
current conditions.
I am confident that
even with unfavorable economic circumstances putting pressure on everyone,
those who can help United Way this year will step up.
There is no better time to give back to the community in a way
that will help a broader range of people during difficult times than giving to
United Way."
In 2008, the
United Way campaign goal was $2 million. Approximately $1.73 million was
pledged. However, with layoffs, down weeks and other unforeseen circumstances,
$1.3 million has actually been collected.
"A goal set
smaller than last year's does not make it an ounce easier to achieve, not in
today's climate,” Sheets said. “However, reducing the goal any further is not a
good option.
The services provided
through United Way agencies are needed now more than ever.
While jobless numbers for Howard County are
more than 14%, that means that more than 85% are still working.
While on paper $1.5 million appears to be
quite a stretch for our United Way goal, if we all pull together and truly Live
United, we can achieve it."
Those agencies
whose programs will receive United Way support include: the American Red Cross
Howard-Tipton Chapter, Bona Vista Programs, Boy Scouts -- Sagamore Council,
Carver Community Center, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Family Service
Association, Food Finders Food Bank, Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, Literacy
Coalition, Mental Health Association, The Salvation Army, Samaritan Caregivers,
United Way Information & Referral, Visiting Nurse Services and Y.M.C.A.
