UNITE NOW
Keep the unity in community
Throughout the years, people in Howard County have pulled together
during times of crisis. Through the Great Depression, devastating floods and
deadly tornados, Howard County residents have cared for one another. For many,
the current economic downturn is turning into the biggest crisis of their
lives.
United Way of Howard County announced today a special,
community-wide fundraising campaign to raise $200,000 for local programs. The
campaign will run through July 1, with the focus on garnering individual
donations from the community.
During a news conference, United Way of Howard County
President Lori Tate announced that the UNITE NOW campaign has already received
commitments of $1,200 from local donors prior to the kick off. Tate said that
raising the UNITE NOW campaign’s $200,000 goal will require everyone’s support,
whether their gifts are large or small.
In announcing the campaign, Tate said, “Everyone is concerned
about the individuals in our community who’ve been impacted by the depressed
economy. We all know people who’ve lost their jobs or faced eviction or
foreclosure. People want to help, but they aren’t sure of the best way to go about
it. The UNITE NOW campaign provides a simple way in which people can give their
money with confidence that it will go where it’s needed most.”
Tate added, “You have until July 1. Plan a party with neighbors
and collect donations, sponsor a fundraising drive at church, or organize a
special event with friends. We are asking everyone to find a way to help."
By initiating this special campaign and
accomplishing the goal, funding/services for the 25 most profoundly challenged
adults at Bona Vista will continue, volunteer assistance through Samaritan
Caregivers to 235 seniors will enable them to remain at home, a safe
environment for 156 women and children will be sustained at the Family Service
Association Domestic Violence Shelter and trained volunteers will still be able
to represent 108 abused and neglected Howard County children in court through
CASA.
United Way will be reaching out to the media and working with
other community partners to spread the word about the UNITE NOW campaign over
the next several weeks. The community-wide fundraising effort will provide an
easy way for people to help those affected by the struggling economy.
