On the down side…

Family Service Association:

  • Request for “Chores-Attendant Care” program increased 212% when comparing the first quarter of 2008 to 2009.
  • The number of people requesting information or getting referrals about the Domestic Violence programs has increased 194% over the same time period in 2008.
  • The Domestic Violence Batterers Program has seen an increase of 623% -- from 141 hours of service given during the first in 2008 to 1019 hours of service in 2009.

Bona Vista:

  • Early childhood services have a waiting list of approximately 190 children who wish to enter Early Head Start or other preschool programs.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Services has seen an increase of 20% in referrals.
  • Taking multiple calls daily from people looking for early childhood services, speech therapy and pediatric physical therapy.

Food Finders Food Bank:

  • Food distributed in the first quarter of 2008 compared to 2009 has increased by 44%.

Salvation Army:

  • First-time applicants for direct assistance have increased 29% over the same time period in 2008.
  • The numbers of clients are up more than 20% comparing March 2008 to March 2009.

Information & Referral/2-1-1:

·        Calls for service totaled 8,221 in 2008, an increase of 21% over 2007. As of May 25, 2009, 2-1-1 had already received 3,453 calls for help.

·        During the first quarter of 2008, first time callers requesting services totaled 338. By the fourth quarter of 2008, first time callers were up to 522.

·        “We are on pace to set new records in our call volume this year. Requests for help with mortgage, rent and utility assistance comprised 30 percent of the total requests, illustrating the impact of job losses and the economic downturn.” – Cindy Dunlap, Executive Director.

On the up side…

Boy Scouts, Sagamore Council:

  • An increase of 61.5% in new youth recruited from 2008 to 2009.
  • Utilization of both camps has increased by 47 youth.
  • “Our family-centered programs deliver what American families are looking for during these difficult times.” – Edward Caldwell, Scout Executive

Literacy Coalition:

  • The number of instructor hours has increased from 393 in 2008 to 1,323 in 2009.
  • The number of tutors for 2009 is double that of all tutors recruited in 2008.
  • “We are seeing a marked increase in the number of volunteers which is allowing us to serve more of our clients one-on-one.” – Bob Stephenson, Executive Director
